Man drowns off Houston River Road

A resident drowned Friday night near Merlin Drive in Westlake, Calcasieu Parish Assistant Coroner Zeb Johnson told the American Press late Sunday.

It is the first reported fatality in Calcasieu Parish related to Hurricane Rita.

"The man was witnessed walking around the area, possibly drinking, and was found later that night," Johnson said. "A neighbor pulled him out from the bank. He was covered until the neighbor could reach authorities Saturday afternoon."

The victim is identified only as a white male who apparently lived in that area.

The body was picked up by West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital.

Merlin Drive is near the intersection of Houston River Road and John Stine Road.

If the man was drunk when observed before the storm he should have been detained and held until conditions were safe. This should apply to all mentally altered and mentally challenged individuals in harms way.

In a perfect world the man would not have been drunk. It is not the governments' responsiblity to save every single individual from themselves. Who is to determine which individuals are mentally altered and/or challenged, FEMA?

what is this world coming to! all want to throw blame everywhere but needed to be. Noone, not Pres. Bush or any Government controll every living being in this country. That is the problem w/society is that everyone wants to blame everyone but themselves for faults and problems of their own. President Bush is an AWSOME leader and the best we have had in a long time.!

I agree with anonymous(4:17pm) regarding people being responsible. However, according to the One and Only true God, not only are we responsible for ourselves, we are responsible for others. I don't agree with President Bush being the best we have had in a long time. Why is it taking so long to relieve these people that are in dire need, but yet so easy to keep spending money to fight a war for reasons, which by the way have changed two or three times since it started.

To anonymous (4:17): in regards to your comments about Pres. Bush being an "AWESOME"leader and the best we've had in a long time.... ARE YOU ON DRUGS? HE'S THE WORST PRESIDENT I'VE EVER SEEN!! WORSE THAN LBJ AND NIXON!!! By the way, the word "control" only has one "L" at the end!!

Someone is definitely on drugs...with that comment regarding BUSH. Wake up. Do you have clue as to what is happening in the US these day? AWESOME...NOT.

Well, he's got no worries now. He's dead. He should not have been drinking. Darwinism at its finest. The strong will manage to survive while the weak make way. Ain't reality a bitch.

If the drunk man was smart he would took off like everybody else did instead of trying to ride the storm out i guess that tells you how smart some individuals are in this world today. I agree with anonymous 1:24 if you wake up and smell the coffee look at what is happening to the U.S. Their's more out there then what we know

The comments above are very good examples of the opposing philosophies of those on the "left" and "right" in our country. I think it is sad that our differences appear to affect every aspect of our society. We should be working together to solve our country's problems. Can you tell by my attitude which side I am on?

In response to 4:32pm; based soley on your comment, I feel that you could be either a moderate Republican or a moderate Democrate. You did not rant, insult, and finger point like a
typical Hillary/Kennedy Liberal, or (like the political opposite equivalent) foam at the mouth like a skinhead neo-nazi. Thanks for your common sense suggestion.

< If the man was drunk when observed before the storm he should have been detained and held until conditions were safe."

Perhaps in the mind of [10:29 pm] but not likely to those who respect “unlawful search and seizure” which is accorded everyone who believes in the U.S. constitution.>

A new emperor arises amongst us (11:09am). Who appointed you to decide our godliness, or lack thereof? In a “free land” have we now lost our “right to choose?”>

Truly we all need Jesus or whatever idol you may serve. The big picture to this scenario is the "Hurricane Victims" and "the World" need help not whose to blame, whether not this was racial motivate or whether Bush is a great President. We all need to get on our knees a pray because prayer is the only thing that can help right now.

Thank you

From the signs, the blame givers will be the first to be eaten by the Frost Giants.
Those who actually helped will be in Valhalla when the battles are over.
Odin and his warriors are needed to cleanse the world.
Awaiting the coming of the Fenrus Wolf and Ragnarock.

So is it the government's responsibility to determine those who need protection from themselves?
And when they come to get you, who will protect you from the government?

What happened in the early 50's when the people of Louisiana were hit by a bad Hurricane, I believe that was karla, The poor people then got bak up the next day and started rebuilding. The goverment did help some but not like now. We are so dependant on the goverment now and that is dangerous because big brother will control you if you let him. let's get up and go on. I grandfather and my father spoke about the great depression and great storms they made it so can we. let's do it.

I agree with the one of self preservation. We all (adults) should try to the best of our abilities to take care of ourselves, and if some help is needed, we should turn to our fiends and neighbors, and kin. As a last resort, should we depend on the Government, because the second we do, they want to tell you exactly what you are going to do. they forget, they work for us, not vice versa.
